Practical tips on Managing Incontinence
Although most people find going to the toilet as a simple task that they do everyday, a lot of elderly people are not as fortunate. Below are some tips to help them with their condition:
  1. Let the elderly person under your care know where the toilet is. If necessary, put a sign on the door.
  2. When no one is using the toilet, leave its door open. This is to avoid an elderly person from assuming that someone is inside.
  3. Make your toilet senior friendly. Install handrails if necessary.
  4. Clear the way going to the toilet of any furniture, junk, or clutter. This will ensure that the toilet is easily accessible to an elderly person.
  5. Clothes that can be immediately unfastened and removed are advisable for elderly persons.
Aids for Incontinence
Perhaps the time will come when the senior under your care cannot use the restroom in any way. When this happens, knowing how to handle the consequences properly will be necessary. Your aim is not only to make him more comfortable, but also to protect his clothes and bedding. Good thing there are products that can greatly help you manage incontinence.
1. Waterproof Mattress. It is difficult to wash mattresses, especially when you have to do it frequently.
But with a waterproof cover, the mattresses will have great protection. The only by-product of a mattress protector is that it can lead to skin sores. The best way to prevent this is by ensuring that the senior’s skin does not come in contact with it.
2. Absorbent Under sheets. These are special under sheets that can be used for beds and chair beds. With them, you are ensured that seniors always sit or lie on a dry surface.
3. Incontinence pads.
These pads look a little like nappies. They can be used the whole day or only during the night. Because they are extremely absorbent, they are able to keep the skin dry.
