For the Next Generation of Seniors, Nothing is More Important than Independence
March 25, 2011 — Senior Helper
In the 1960s, the 76 million baby boomers began to enter adulthood. During that period, they established themselves as a generation that values independence. Everything they did-from the long hair to the war protests to the rock music-was meant to make a statement. The statement was “we want to be free”; free to define ourselves, free to question authority, free to question societal norms, free to think differently than their parents, free to change the world.
For over half a century, the boomers have been changing the world, and as they enter retirement, they do not intend to go quietly. They still value their freedom every bit as much as they did when they were young adults. This means that as the boomers go into retirement, societal norms about what people do in their retirement is going to change. The old way of doing things-sending mom and dad off to the nursing home-that won’t fly with this generation.
No, the boomers plan to stay active and independent as long as possible. In fact, many plan to continue working well into what other generations used to call retirement. They also plan to stay in their present homes, or if they make a move at all, it will be to buy a condo or townhome in a retirement community. But moving to a nursing home? Forget about it.
With this independent spirit comes an ever-growing need for senior care services to accommodate this mindset. This is why now, more than ever, in home elder care services will be in high demand. It is the most cost effective option to address mom and dad’s growing health care needs while maintaining the freedom they have always valued.
